three one six oh!

Oh what a great night the Three One Six Oh! Film Festival was.

Participants enjoyed a great selection of short films in the Cameo Outdoor Cinema on a very balmy summer evening.

Organisers had a tough time deciding on the final films for selection, this year's short film competition was inundated with entries from young filmmakers from across Victoria.

It was up to the audience on the night to vote for their favourite film. I was pleased to sponsor their prize.

The competition was stiff, but it was terrific to learn that a film called Spit was the winner.

I had the great pleasure of presenting first prize to Director, David and Producer Brian Oakley.

Spit is a documentary about making it in the music business while discovering new ways to contribute to society. Quirky and poignant, the story begins by exploring the exploits of a Christian Rapper who falls into employment as a carer for someone with Cerebral Palsy. It was a very worthy winner.

My congrats to Pocket Bonfire who organised the film festival, it was a great arts event in the Hills and sponsored by a Yarra Ranges Festivals and Events grant.

three-one-six-oh! onsale

It is terrific to see tickets on sale for the Three One Six Oh! Film Festival.

In it's seventh year, featuring short films and videos from Melbourne and surrounds, this year's program is going to be great. The festival will be held Saturday 25th February, films start at dusk, but there's plenty of entertainment before hand.

I have supported this short film festival since it's inception and this year I'm proud to be able to support the event with a donation of $500 to be awarded to best film, as voted by the audience. The festival is also supported with an Events Grant from the Shire of Yarra Ranges.

It's a great night out, at the outdoor cinema at Belgrave's very own Cameo Cinema.

This year's event will be a real treat, with the tunnel entrance to the outdoor cinema converted to Tunnel Vision, an underground arts space, featuring contemporary still and motion works from around the state.

You can come early and picnic, listening to the fine sounds of local muso, Great Earthquake as well as Elk & Whale and Siblings.

To buy your tickets click here. I look forward to seeing you on the night.

calling victorian film makers

Calling Victorian Film Makers, entries are open for THREE ONE SIX OH film festival no7.

In it's seventh year and third name change (once called the Blue Dandenongs Young Filmmakers Festival - yes a bit of a mouthful, then Hillside Film Festival) THREE ONE SIX OH! is a great opportunity to submit your short film and hopefully have it selected for the festival screening at the the fabulous Cameo Outdoor Cinema.

Entries must be:
~ only from Victorian entrants
~ duration under 15 minutes

You can submit film, video, documentaries, fiction, sports, moving art or animation. If you'd like to know more click here.

Past festivals have seen a great mix of eclectic films, dramatic pieces, comedy, music videos, you name it, it's probably been part of past festivals. I'm very proud to be able to support THREE ONE SIX OH!, in it's seventh year Yarra Ranges Council has been a major sponsor every year.

Don't delay, this is a great opportunity for budding Victorian film makers, but there's deadlines, you must submit your work by 25 Nov, 2011.

calling young filmmakers with a story to tell

Celebrating its fifth year in 2010, the Hillside Film Festival (formerly the Blue Dandenongs Young Filmmakers Festival) is calling for entries from Victoria’s most-promising young filmmakers. The festival gives emerging filmmakers the opportunity to see their films on the big screen in front of a large audience, be judged professionally by some of the most respected filmmakers and writers in the country, and win some fantastic prizes along the way.

Screened at the fabulous (and local) Cameo Outdoor Cinema in Belgrave, the festival proudly focuses on artistic excellence and innovation, celebrating great filmmaking across all genres, styles and budgets. Hillside Film Festival want to hear from young filmmakers with a unique voice, a story to tell and a fresh approach to filmmaking – not just those with the best equipment or famous friends. Industry judges include Sandra Sciberras, director of the AFI award-winning ‘Caterpillar Wish’ (AUS 2006), and Bridget Callow, producer of the AFI-nominated ‘Bitter and Twisted’ (AUS 2008).

This year, filmmakers are competing for a stack of cash and awards, including a $1,000 cash prize from The Upwey & District Community Bank Group and a prize pack from Madman Entertainment. Selected films will also feature on the small screen, presented on Foxtel’s Aurora Community Channel as part of Youth Week 2010. To enter, films must be 15 minutes or less, and the filmmaker from Victoria and aged 30 or under.

For more information, and to enter online, check out

Entries close on Monday 2nd November.

blue dandenongs youth film festival - its back....

The Blue Dandenongs Youth Film Festival will be back for its third instalment and I for one can't wait to see this year's entries.

Between its first and second years, BDYFF saw its number of entries double and in 2008 I'm told that we are in for more amazing work by young filmmakers locally, nationally and internationally.

The festival is major cultural event for the Dandenong Ranges, and provides a forum for young filmmakers to compete and network with their peers. Unlike most other festivals for young filmmakers, the BDYFF screening program focuses on artistic excellence and story telling, rather than participation.

If you are an aspiring filmmaker, are interested in contemporary film, want to be entertained with short films of a very high standard or just like heading to the outdoor cinema at the Cameo in Belgrave, the BDYFF is for you.

When: Friday 15th February and Saturday 16th February, 2008, doors open 1 hour before dusk
