The South Belgrave Sports and Community organisations are proud to host “A Celebration of the Great Black Caviar”, Australia’s own undefeated and greatest sprinter on earth.

Many locals credit the rolling hills of South Belgrave as
a key to Black Caviar's success.

Join us in meeting our Guests of Honour - Peter Moody & Luke Nolen, Black Caviar’s Trainer and Jockey, as they talk all things racing. This night provides a chance to get up close and personal with two of Australia’s most respected racing identities.

fernlea’s fabulous,fundraiser

Fernlea House is holding a Fabulous, Fantastic, Frivolous and Fun, Fundraising UN DEB BALL.

Yes, an Un Deb Ball on 18 May. It sounds like a lot of fun and is for a very good cause.

I am always immensely inspired by those who work and volunteer at Fernlea. Their philosophy of “Living, Laughing and Loving” shows in everything they do, but they can't do it alone and need to fundraise in order to continue to operate.

Fernlea House offers Palliative Day Respite for Carers looking after people with Life limiting Illnesses. This does not just mean cancer but also includes illnesses such as Parkinsons, Huntingtons, MS, Motor Neurone Disease, Chronic Obstructive Airways Disease, Diabetes Complications and Liver failure among many others. A palliative illness is one which will get progressively worse over time and put limits on your life expectancy. Dementia is becoming more common as a palliative illness.

At Fernlea, they aim to improve people’s quality of life during the time their illness is progressive and help them and their families live and enjoy life to the fullest possible.

Fernlea's services are provided either in centre in Emerald (& Healesville) or in Carers home (FERNS). Volunteer complementary therapists offer their services (eg Reiki), and a Memoirs program is available. Volunteers transport our guests to and from the Centre either using our bus or in their own cars.

Fernlea House currently operates in Emerald, and has a day program in Healesville. Its unique model of care uses palliative trained Nurses supported by trained volunteers and other professional staff. People love coming to Fernlea for the warmth, love, care, acceptance and socialisation they receive from everyone, who honour their choices, and respect them for who they are.

So pencil this one in your diary, it will be a lot of fun and for a very good cause.

koha cafe back on the menu

The community came out in droves to support the Koha Cafe fundraiser, held at Wild Thyme in Warburton this weekend.

The fundraiser, organised by Michelle, Kate and Lily, was a great success with organisers reporting a whopping $3,799 raised to help the cafe continue it's operation.

The Yarra Ranges Councillors also contributed to the day, all of us donating funds from our community ward funds, making a total contribution from councillors $1,350. Our Deputy Mayor, Cr Jeanette McRae presented the cheque to Koha Cafe powerhouse, Suyin Chan.



African Dancing was part of the day's entertainment as
part of a terrific line up of local talent to celebrate this
well loved community cafe.

Cafe Koha is a community based project located in Yarra Junction. Anyone can come in and have a meal and pay what they can afford or what they think it's worth. The aim of Cafe Koha is to create community resilience and promote social inclusion. They do a great job and it was clear from the support received on the day, they are a very much loved community enterprise.

Well done to the organisers, you did a great job and have given the cafe much earned breathing space in terms of its operation. 

hills amnesty fun fundraiser

The Hills Group of Amnesty International are holding a Trivia Night fundraiser.

A regular event, this year's Trivia Night will be held at the Burrinja Cafe. Your $25 entry fee gets you the meal of your choice, a soft drink and entry to the Trivia Competition.

As always there will be plenty of fun games and great prizes on offer throughout the night as well as more goodies available through the silent auction.

It promises to be a night of fun facts and great company, so please get your family and friends together and make sure you book a table early to avoid disappointment as it is a very popular night!

Maximum table size will be 8 people but feel free to come down just on your own as AI will easily accommodate you into a table where you will get to make new friends and have plenty of laughs!

fernlea fundraiser - 17 june

Fernlea House are organising a fundraiser with a difference. A range of local artists will

be on the stage together performing on stage round robin style.

It's a great opportunity to hear local artists, Tracey Roberts, Owen Hardridge, Michelle Chandler, Christina Green, Phil Smith, Stax & Zoltan Almady.

All monies go to Fernlea House respite day centre for palliative care.

Where: The GEM Community Arts Centre, 19 Kilvington Drive, Emerald
When: Friday 17 June, Doors open 7pm, music starts 7.30 sharp.
Cost: $15 tickets at door.

Fernlea House offers a very special palliative care service for our community. It is not a clinical model of service but a social respite model that cares for people diagnosed with a life limiting illness.

Since opening in 2005, their service has flourished and offers social respite as a free service. They also offer bereavement support, home visits, assisted memoir writing, community education and extensive training programs for volunteers.

What I find significant about Fernlea is their dedicated pool of volunteers, numbering in excess of fifty at any given point in time.

One of the stand out things for me about Fernlea is its ability to make guests comfortable and at ease, many guests enjoy a meal together and will happily eat, a rare experience for those with a life limiting illness.

I have no doubt that Fernlea House fills a critical need in our community for those with life limiting illness and I will continue to be a strong advocate for Fernlea House and the social respite model they practice.

sherbrooke school hosts sea shepherd concert

The enterprising students of the Sherbrooke Community School have organised a fundraiser to support the Sea Shepherd. The Sea Shepherd Concert and Auction is a jam packed event with performances by Anna Paddick, Kate Henderson, Athula Mamaborupodakqua and The Ineligible. An auction will be part of the night with fantastic items donated by a great range of artists and organisations. Vegan finger food will be provided.

It’s a great initiative, I encourage you to go along, I certainly will be.
